A YEAR-ROUND DESTINATION
Iceland is rugged and beautiful. And perfect for most outdoor adventures, all year round. The landscape serves as an epic backdrop to whatever activity you have in mind. But don't take our word for it. Just see for yourself.
Most people come to Iceland for nature. But Iceland's most unrivaled treasure is the people, who are warm and friendly, and easy with a smile. Enjoy a walk around town, visit a local hot spring, or enjoy a local cafe for a chance to mingle with these friendly people.
Formed about 25 million years ago, Iceland is one of the youngest landmasses on the planet characterized by deep fjords, glaciers, waterfalls, geysers, volcanoes and black sand beaches.
HISTORY & HERITAGE
The country was settled by Norsemen from Scandinavia and Celts from the British Isles in the 9th and 10th centuries, who established the world's first parliament.
Iceland was the last country in Europe to be settled. To this day, it is one of the most sparsely populated counties in the world. Due to its geographical location, Iceland's culture is unique due to the fact it was mostly outside the influences of Europe and America, until the late nineteenth century.
The most important ingredient in Icelandic cuisine is location. Iceland is blessed with an abundance of fresh water, clean nature and fertile fishing grounds, while geothermal energy makes it possible to supply a year-round offering of fresh vegetables, grown locally in organic greenhouses.
THE LAND OF FIRE AND ICE
Home to the largest glaciers in Europe, as well as some of the world's most active volcanoes, Iceland is widely known as "The Land of Fire and Ice". But Iceland escapes definition. With long summer days of near 24-hours of sunlight, offset by short winter days with very little sunlight at all, it is also the land of light and darkness.
Iceland remains largely uninhabited. Iceland's rivers are perfect for rafting and fishing; its mountains, volcanoes and glaciers are good for hiking, climbing, dog-sledding, and snowmobiling; its caves for exploring; and its oceans for fishing and wildlife viewing.
The extreme dark of the Icelandic winter has a few perks. Between September and April, Iceland is treated to a magnificent natural display; the phenomenon of aurora borealis, or also know as the Northern Lights.
Iceland has a wealth of fauna in its seas and skies, which draw visitors from the world over; it is one of the best places to visit in terms of bird watching, including the largest Atlantic Puffin colony in the world, seal watching, and whale watching—including the Orca, Minke, Humpback, and Blue Whale—which can be seen during the summer months in the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans on either side of the island.
